Kazakh-U.S. parliamentary cooperation discussed in Astana

Chairman of the Majilis of the Kazakh Parliament Nurlan Nigmatulin met with the U.S. parliamentary delegation headed by Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia of the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Foreign Affairs Dan Burton on Monday, the Lower House's press service said.

Speaking of the Kazakh-American relations in general, the sides noted the strategic character of cooperation between our countries. N.Nigmatulin stressed the exceptional role of President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in achieving a high level of mutual understanding between Kazakhstan and the United States in matters of international stability, nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, fight against international terrorism and extremism.

The two sides also discussed cooperation between the Majilis of the Parliament and U.S. Congress. They expressed confidence that further development of relations between the higher legislative bodies would strengthen the partnership between the two states.

The Majilis formed a group for cooperation with parliamentarians of the United States of America, which consists of 26 MPs. The "Club of Friends of Kazakhstan" has been operating in the U.S. Congress since 2008.

The U.S. parliamentarians noted the leading role of Kazakhstan in Central Asia in economic and political development. And the new Majilis of the Parliament, which includes representatives of three parties, was named an important factor in the country's democratic process.
