UNHCR calls Kazakhstan not to give away Andijan refugees

The mission of UN High Commissioner for Refugees in RK calls the international community, including the government of Kazakhstan, to interfere into the situation around Uzbek refugees from Andijan to avoid their extradition to the government of Uzbekistan. Cesar Dubon, acting head of UNHCR in RK, has stated this today, June 20, at a press conference in Almaty, KZ-today reports.

C. Dubon has observed that the UNHCR is concerned about the fact of the extraditions by the government of Kyrgyzstan. He has explained that the official Bishkek did it because it is "under big pressure."

The UNHCR attentively follows the situation around the refugees in Jalal-Abad region, Kyrgyzstan, and creates procurement reserves for the cold season.

539 Uzbek refugee claimants entered the territory of Kyrgyzstan as a result of events in Andijan and Andijan region in May 2005. Currently they live in a refugee camp in Jalal-Abad region crated with the help of the UNHCR and the Red Crescent.
