Kyrgyz president proposes to UN to cancel debt of poor mountain countries

Askar Akayev, president of Kyrgyzstan, on behalf of "interested countries" has proposed to the UN general assembly to pass a resolution recommending to cancel foreign debts of poor mountain countries, KZ-today has been informed by the Kyrgyz presidential press service.

The press service observes that the head of state brought forth that initiative September 28 during general discussions at the 59th session of the UN general assembly.

"It would serve as a powerful impact for their comprehensive development, supersession of poverty line, fully complying with aims announced by the Milennium declaration," - Kyrgyz president observed.

A corresponding draft resolution was presented by the delegation of Kyrgyz Republic together with other delegations to the general assembly participants.

According to the press service, Kofi Annan, UN secretary general, stressed a readiness of the UN to further support economic and other reforms conducted in Kyrgyzstan, which must doubtlessly help its further negotiations with the Paris club and an establishment of macroeconomic stability in the country.
