President met Kazakhstani cosmonaut candidates

Today, on 20 October, Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev President of Kazakhstan held a meeting with Mr. Mukhtar Aimakhatov and Mr. Aidyn Aimbetov, Kazakhstani cosmonaut candidates and Mr. Yuri Lonchakov, crew commander of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center of the Russian Federation, KZ-today reports.

"We have discussed with Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev the training program for cosmonauts for the forthcoming 2-3 years," Mr. Yuri Lonchakov said.

"Mr. Mukhtar Aimakhatov and Mr. Aidyn Aimbetov have been selected from several thousand candidates," Talgat Musabayev, space pilot of Kazakhstan noted. Over two thousand candidates participated in the selection. 850 persons were medically examined and only four of them were selected. Currently, two candidates have the training course in the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. They have every prospect of success, space pilot stressed.

"The space training program takes 5-6 years, including training in the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center before May 2005, there they will go in for state examination to get test-cosmonaut degree, then group training and finally training for crew members," Mr. Yuri Lonchakov explained.
