1584 HIV infection cases revealed as of April 1in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek. April 3. Kazakhstan Today - As of April 1, 2008, according to the Republican Association (RA) AIDS, 1584 HIV infection cases, including AIDS, have been revealed in Kyrgyzstan, the agency reports referring to the press service of RA AIDS.

According to the press service, 75 % of HIV infected are consumers of injection drugs, 5 % - pregnant women; in 20 % of cases the source of infection is not established.

The largest quantity of HIV cases have been registered in the age group 25 - 29. HIV infection cases in younger youth group (15 - 17) have been registered as well. The main way of the spread of HIV is through injection.

Significant growth of HIV infection in Kyrgyzstan, especially in the southern region, has been registered. For the last five years the number of officially registered HIV/AIDS infected increased by more than 15 times.
